Liberty Belle is the name of three fictional super-heroines. Two are from DC Comics: Libby Lawrence and Jesse Chambers, and the other is from Charlton Comics: Caroline Dean.
I am lead to understand that the ’anti-censorship’ comic book character Liberty Belle was influenced by the look of Veronica Lake.
Champion athlete Libby Lawrence was in Poland with her father in 1939 when Germany invaded. Her father was killed in an air attack, and Libby eventually made it to France and swam the English Channel to escape. With her new celebrity status she advocated fighting the Axis, and took on the masked identity of Liberty Belle to fight Nazi agents in the U.S.
The original Liberty Belle, Libby Lawrence, debuted in Boy Commandos #1 (December 1942). She was a Golden Age super heroine whose backstory included being an Olympic athlete and the daughter of a U.S. Senator.
Her powers, which included enhanced strength, speed, and agility, were derived from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia; she believed her abilities were strongest when the bell was ringing. Libby Lawrence also served as a member of the All-Star Squadron, a team of superheroes active during World War II.
The mantle of Liberty Belle was later taken up by Jesse Chambers, the daughter of Libby Lawrence and Johnny Quick. Jesse first appeared in Justice Society of America (vol. 2) #1 in August 1992. Like her mother, Jesse has superhuman abilities, which she initially used under the moniker "Jesse Quick," tapping into the "Speed Force" like her father.
She later adopted the Liberty Belle persona, combining her super-speed with the enhanced physical abilities reminiscent of her mother’s. Jesse has been involved with various incarnations of the Justice Society and other superhero teams.
