People ask me how I got into Veronica Lake, so here seems a good place to tell the story one more time.
One day back in the mid 1990’s I was surfing the newsgroups (as you did back then... it was a simplistic way to share knowledge and fandoms.. an early version of forums effectively). I believe it was [alt. binaries. gothic] and came across 4 pictures titled lake01.jpg etc. and was like.. wow.. who’s the classy looking chick?
Next day I just happen to rent the newly released L.A.Confidential.. and guess what.. LAKE! was a bit too much of a coincidence. So I started looking for info in my movie books and on the web till I found the 1 or 2 sites out there with anything on her.
I was in the middle of a starting a project at that time, I’d become a bit of a Marilyn Monroe fan and was planning the best tribute site to her on the net.. but I soon realised that there were already quality sites out there and I just didn’t have enough new material to offer. So it came to mind.. why not do the best Veronica Lake tribute site on the web. There were no dedicated competitors and I wanted to know more myself about who she was.
With 30 or so pictures (used with kind permission of the Silver Screen archive) I set out to create the design and the original hosting was on Geocities. It wasn’t long before visitors started coming and inspiring me to work more. Not a month went by for 4 years when I didn’t get some new email or information with which to update the site.
You know what’s weird?.. After discovering Veronica I was talking with my mother. Turns out she was likely given the middle name Veronica because her father was a fan of the actress.. small world.
