In the early 2000’s some strange stories started to appear regarding the ashes of Veronica Lake having been apparently found despite them originally being said to have been scattered on the coast in Florida.
According to articles in Today.com, nytimes.com and others her partial ashes were discovered in a Catskills Mountains antique store called the Mystery Spot.
According to Donald Bain, her friend and ghostwriter, her ashes were stored at a Burlington (Vermont) funeral home following her cremation and likely remained there until March 1976 when friends volunteered to scatter Lake’s ashes in Florida, something she had spoken. Bain sent $200 to cover storage fees and the ashes were shipped to a William Roos, another friend of Lake in her final years, and the ashes duly scattered off the coast of Miami.
After some rather unlikely events where a small amount of, what was reputed to be the remains of, the ashes and the urn they were in become separated and ended up in the antique shop as a publicity stunt that was topped off with a Lake Look-A-Like competition.
A strange story and one full of unlikely and uncorroborated elements but it put the name Veronica Lake in the news once again.
