An exceptional romantic melodrama. Boyer is desperately trying to marry a vulnerable American (de Havilland) in order to enter the United States.
The story of an immigrant to the US using a sham marriage to again entry but in the process finds his mark might actually be the one for him.
Charles Boyer, Olivia de Havilland and Paulette Goddard turn in solid performances but the plot seemed a bit too thin and obvious. It's from a different time and is certainly well shot and scripted as it dances around an age old subject. It feels like a Saturday afternoon TV movie and blends in all to well with that overstuff genre. Not dark or clever enough to to be memorable but inoffensive stuff.
Lake:
Name checks I Wanted Wings. In fact Lake is seen filming her phone call scene from Wings as part of a studio tour with the point of view from behind the camera. She is also briefly seen in the background leaving set.. but that's it. to call this a Lake film is a stretch but she is prominently on screen and has dialogue in a solo shot.
